California Über Alles

"California Über Alles" was the first single by the Dead Kennedys. The title is an allusion to the old national anthem of Germany: "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles." ("Germany, Germany above all,").

The song focuses on Jerry Brown, the Governor of California between 1975 and 1983, and is sung from his perspective. An imaginary Brown outlines a hippie-fascist vision for America, in which his "suede denim secret police" kill un-cool people with "organic poison gas" chambers.

Lyricist Jello Biafra later said that he now feels different about Brown, as it turned out he wasn't as bad as he thought he would be.

Extra Credit: Jeopardy Questions

Class participation is 10% of your grade. To boost your class participation grade, bring in two Jeopardy questions that are relevant to the subjects that we have been learning. Be prepared to read the two questions to the class.

These must be actual questions used on a recent episode of Jeopardy. Questions must be typed in MLA Format and ready to hand in to professor Gorgie.

Jeopardy airs on KABC (channel 7) at 7pm.

Extra Credit: Presidential Library Paper

Go to a presidential library and write about it. There are two in driving distance: Ronald Reagan, and Richard Nixon.

Presidential libraries include a museum-like tour through the president's time in office. From the information displayed at the library, write a paper contrasting one particular element of the president's career (e.g. Foreign Policy, Campaigns, Military Involvement, etc.), with references from our textbook. You are given free reign to choose any topic that you find interesting from the library, provided that you can also find references in our textbook.
  • Completed papers must include a ticket stub from the library visited. No papers will be accepted without proof of admission.
  • The paper must be at least 10 pages, but no more than 20.
  • The paper must include at least 10 of the Bold Terms found in our textbook that relate to the topic that you are writing on.
  • This will be due on the last day of class at the latest (early papers are encouraged, but not mandatory.)
